Neil Sedaka, the celebrated American singer-songwriter who helped shape late-1950s and 1960s pop music, has died at the age of 86. Over a career spanning more than six decades, he became known for timeless hits such as “Calendar Girl,” “Laughter in the Rain,” and
“Breaking Up Is Hard to Do.” His melodic gift and polished piano style made him one of the most consistent and versatile hitmakers of his generation.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1939, Sedaka showed early musical promise and studied classical piano at the Juilliard School’s Preparatory Division for Children. His formal training gave him a strong foundation in harmony and composition, setting him apart from many of his pop contemporaries. He began his career in the 1950s with the vocal group the Tokens and soon formed a successful songwriting partnership with lyricist Howard Greenfield.
Sedaka rose to fame as a solo artist in 1959 with “Oh! Carol,” followed by a string of early 1960s hits. His original upbeat version of “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1962. Though the British Invasion slowed his momentum mid-decade, he reinvented himself in the 1970s with a successful comeback, including a slower ballad version of “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do” and the chart-topping “Laughter in the Rain.”
Throughout his career, Sedaka sold millions of records worldwide, earned multiple Grammy nominations, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. His songs were recorded by legendary performers such as Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, reflecting the broad respect he commanded within the industry. He was admired not only for his catchy melodies but also for his craftsmanship and professionalism.
Beyond music, Sedaka was devoted to his family, remaining married to his wife Leba for more than six decades and raising two children. Known for his discipline, warmth, and artistic integrity, he continued performing well into his later years.
